When are the 2027 Swiss health insurance premiums published?
Alejandro Redondo Lázaro · 7 min read · Published 23.08.2026
The 2027 premiums for the compulsory basic health insurance come out at the end of September 2026. They are approved by Switzerland’s Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH, the BAG in German and the OFSP in French), and they all become public on the same day. Your premium is simply what you pay every month for your insurance.
- End of September 2026. The 2027 premiums are published. From that day you can see what you would pay.
- End of October 2026. Your insurer must have written to you with your new premium. That is a legal deadline, not a courtesy.
- 30 November 2026. The last day to switch insurer. What counts is the day your letter ARRIVES, not the day you send it.
If you would rather not watch the calendar, leave your email at the bottom of this page. We will write to you the day the premiums come out.
What exact day are the 2027 premiums published?
No date is fixed in law. The FOPH publishes once it has finished approving the premiums of every insurer, and in recent years that has fallen in the last week of September. The 2026 premiums, for example, were announced on 23 September 2025.
Plan around that week. But do not treat any exact date as certain until the FOPH confirms it.
As a reference for where we start from, in 2026 the average monthly premium for the basic insurance is 393.30 francs, 4.4% more than in 2025.
When does your insurer tell you what you will pay?
Before the end of October. The law requires your insurer to announce your new premium at least two months in advance, and to remind you in that same letter that you can switch. The new premium starts on 1 January, so the letter has to reach you by the end of October at the latest.
If nothing has arrived by mid-November, call your insurer and ask for it. Do not wait until December. By then the window to switch has already closed.
What is your deadline to switch insurer?
30 November. And here is the trap that costs the most. What counts is the day your letter arrives at the insurer, not the day you post it. In 2026, 30 November falls on a Monday. Send your letter in mid-November and it arrives with room to spare.
If you are switching, send the cancellation to your old insurer and apply to the new one in parallel. Do not wait to be accepted before you cancel. In the basic insurance the new insurer has to take you, and you cannot end up without cover. The switch only becomes effective once the new insurer confirms to the old one that it covers you from 1 January.
What can you change in autumn, and by when?
| What you change | When you must give notice | Effective from |
|---|---|---|
| Your insurer | Your letter has to reach them before 30 November | 1 January |
| Lowering your deductible | Your notice has to arrive before 30 November | 1 January |
| Raising your deductible | No notice period is set in law, but the FOPH recommends telling your insurer by mid-December at the latest | 1 January |
| Moving from the standard model to an alternative one (family doctor, HMO, telemedicine) at your own insurer | At any time of the year, since 2025 | Whatever your insurer confirms to you in writing |
| Jumping from one alternative model to another, or back to the standard model | Your notice has to arrive before 30 November | 1 January |
| Supplementary insurance | It has its own deadlines, and at many insurers they close as early as September | Depends on your contract |
Each of those decisions has its own guide. The numbers for choosing between the 300 and the 2,500 are in the deductible guide, and how each model works is in the guide to the models.
Supplementary insurance closes the window first. If you are thinking of reorganising your cover, look at its deadlines FIRST. By the time the basic premiums come out, yours may already have passed. It is set out insurer by insurer in how to cancel supplementary health insurance.
What can you do in the meantime?
- Find this year’s policy and note down three things. What you pay per month, your deductible and your model. With those you can compare in two minutes the day the premiums come out.
- Look at the deadlines of your supplementary insurance, if you have one. They fall due first.
- Make sure you have no outstanding bills with your insurer. An unpaid amount blocks the switch.
- When the premiums are published, compare your own situation in the calculator before you decide anything.
- If you switch, send the letter in mid-November, not on the 29th.
If you change nothing, there is no paperwork to do. You keep the same insurer, the same deductible and the same model, and the new premium applies on its own from 1 January.
When are the 2027 health insurance premiums published in Switzerland?
At the end of September 2026. The FOPH, the Federal Office of Public Health, approves and publishes them, and they all come out on the same day. No date is fixed in law. In recent years it has been the last week of September, and the 2026 premiums were announced on 23 September 2025.
When must my insurer tell me my new premium?
At least two months before it applies. The new premium starts on 1 January, so the letter has to reach you before the end of October. The law also requires that same letter to remind you that you can switch insurer. If nothing has arrived by mid-November, call them.
What is my deadline to switch insurer for 2027?
30 November 2026, counting the day your letter arrives at the insurer, not the day you send it. In 2026 that date falls on a Monday. If on 31 December you still owe premiums, cost sharing, interest or debt collection charges that were demanded before 30 November, the switch cannot go through.
Do I have to wait for the new insurer to accept me before I cancel?
No. In the basic insurance the new insurer has to take you, so send the cancellation to your old insurer and apply to the new one in parallel. Waiting only risks letting 30 November pass. And you cannot end up without cover, because your membership of the old insurer does not end until the new one confirms that it covers you without interruption.
Can I change model in the middle of the year?
It depends which way you are going. Since 2025, moving from the standard model to one with a restricted choice of doctor (family doctor, HMO or telemedicine) at your own insurer is possible at any time of the year. Leaving an alternative model, or jumping from one to another, is only possible for 1 January, with your notice arriving before 30 November.
Do I have to do anything if I do not want to change?
No. If you do nothing, you keep the same insurer, the same deductible and the same model, and your new premium applies from 1 January. Autumn is the chance to review, not an obligation to move.
Will premiums go up in 2027?
Until the FOPH publishes them, nobody knows. Forecasts from various organisations circulate every summer, and the FOPH itself usually warns that they are premature. What is known is where we start from. In 2026 the average monthly premium is 393.30 francs, 4.4% more than in 2025.
